The research activity of the faculty focuses on the application of information technologies in the aspect of processing spatial information and the use of modern measurement techniques, as well as improving the methods of the evaluation of the natural environment, the optimisation of the influence of industry on its condition, and the restoration of biological functions to contaminated areas.
Geodesy and cartography
- forensic expertises on surveying procedures while deciding on the ownership of real estates;
- designing of testing bases for checking electronic range finders, comparison and certification of precise levelling staffs, providing surveying instruments with precision class;
- measurements and computations of displacements of services objects, buildings and area under deformation caused by mining activities;
- designing of surveying detailed bases;
- performance of atypical surveying tasks with application of modern measurement technologies, non-standard elaboration of results from GPS signal measurement results;
- special surveying calculations: re-calculation of coordinates, transformations;
- automatic generalisation of linear and surface objects included in cartographic data bases used for map making.
Photogrammetry and remotes sensing
- Image classification, including using ML (Machine Learning)
- Validation of GPS devices and orthoimages for control in the IACS agricultural subsidy system, EU JRC certification
- Low-level raids using multispectral, hyperspectral and thermal cameras
- Ground-based spectrometric measurements and laser scanning, data acquisition and processing
- Performing orthophoto maps and NMT from all ceilings, from photos SfM (Structure from Motion) and laser scanning
- Automation of measurement processes on images (e.g., cavitation, matching)
- Analysis of the quality of spatial data, analysis of risk-based decision making and spatial analysis
Geohazards and mining surveying
- Research on geohazards associated with climate change and anthropogenic transformation of the rock mass structure and properties—analysis of impacts and mitigation strategies (flooding and inundation, sinkholes, closed basins, landslides, and submergence of deltaic areas)
- Specialized measurements and new geodetic technologies for the precise management of underground excavations (tunnels, mines) and geodetic monitoring of surface displacements and movements (tailings ponds and municipal waste reservoirs), as well as underground geological structures (mines, storage chambers, caves, historic structures)
- basic research on rock mass displacements in the context of the geomechanics of physical media resulting from human activity;
- modeling and forecasting of displacements and deformations of the rock mass and the ground surface resulting from the extraction of solid (coal, raw materials), gaseous, and liquid (crude oil, water) resources
- assessment of the impact of mining activities on surface development, infrastructure, and the natural environment;
- GIS and databases—design, implementation and analysis of documentation systems for land and built-up area changes, including up-to-date forecasts of the effects of future mining operations;
- design and assessment of options for partial mining operations and procedures for validating impacts within existing protective pillars in built-up areas and protective pillars of mine shafts;
- scientific and engineering research on the effects of mining operations on land
Environmental enginering
- elaboration of a system for collecting, selecting and neutralisation of chemical wastes generated in large research units;
- elaboration of a construction and study on possible applications of different versions of an ammeter sensor for NO determinations in biomedical sciences;
- use of UV radiation for mineralisation of samples of flotation wastes in voltammeter determinations of heavy metals;
- control of combustion processes in power boilers;
- measurement of contents of selected heavy metals in soils and plants;
- investigations of physico-chemical processes occurring in solidified wastes aimed at attaining the minimum risk to the natural environment.
